Champagne Leclerc Briant have announced that in two years they will be launching a world first; a champagne fermented in a gold barrel. The barrel itself is stainless steel, but lined with 24 carat gold and holds 228 litres. The barrel currently holds wine from the brand’s La Croisette vineyard - the plot behind the winery in Epernay, which is planted with Chardonnay vines. The company applies the principles of biodynamic viticulture and due to their organic credentials Leclerc Briant is Champagne’s only 100% organic négociant. There is some debate as to how or why the use of a gold lined barrel would affect the wine given gold is an inert metal. Only time will tell if the champagne actually is the new gold standard.
