This is quite an extraordinary story, combining efforts to raise money to help conserve rare butterflies, with some innovative beer brewing. In a collaboration between Florida’s First Magnitude Brewing and the Florida Museum of Natural History, Frosted Elfin New England-Style Session Pale Ale was created. In what is believed to be a world’s first, wild yeast was collected from the Frosted Elfin, a small brown butterfly, native to Apalachicola National Forest region, which was then cultivated and used in the brewing process. The aim was to raise awareness of the declining numbers of Frosted Elfin. Arthur Rudolph, quality manager at First Magnitude, told the Florida Museum: “Yeast wants to attract pollinators and they are attracted to the aroma of flowers, so the yeast produces similar aromatic compounds.” A percentage of all sales and proceeds from marketing events will go to support conservation work in Florida.
