Annual Wine Battle in Spain Turns The Town of Haro Red

August 8, 2019

Every year in the town of Haro, thousands of people make their way to one of Spain’s best loved vineyards, all ready to participate in the annual wine battle. Haro is located in the heart of the Rioja wine growing region.

The battle has one main goal; to ensure that your neighbour is covered in wine - head to toe - as quickly as possible. The battle is held to celebrate St Peter, as well as the abundance of wine that comes from the region. Before the festivities begin, an early morning mass is held. After that, mayhem reigns until the 18,500 gallons of wine have been exhausted. The drenched revellers then sit down to eat lunch together - what a way to spend a day!
